Working Group EAYO/EAAO:
The Working Group of EAYO/EAAO that is active since the EAYO GA in Vaduz/Liechtenstein in June 2007 had its 2nd meeting in Dublin 8 and 9 February 2008. It was a great opportunity to be present at the 13th IAYO festival and to experience the energy of this very active EAYO member!
Meeting so many people involved in Youth Orchestras gave us, the members of the Working group, new ideas and the confidence that our aims and ‘networking’ are great and will contribute to more possibilities for orchestra members of all ages. Of course we fully realise that young musicians need us to create more possibilities for them to play in a full orchestra, independent where they live or what their budget is.
Please look at http://www.eayo.org/ for the Minutes of the General Assembly 2007 and the 1st WG meeting in the Netherland (1/2 September 07).
The Minutes of this 2nd meeting will follow asap; see meetings/previous.
EAYO website:
Our Webmaster Allin Gray is back into IAYO business, since October 07, as General Manager. Of course he was very busy his first month with the 13th Festival, see Programme, but he managed also to review the EAYO memberships page and will be busy soon with a revision of the Festival Database. We already went through the present data and found that several festivals changed their directors etc. This is why we will make it much simpler and will only mention the Festival name and website, with click function.
Festivals:
Please give us your information if you know of more festivals!
You already had direct mail from our Luxembourg member about the 24th International Music Week in Luxembourg – Ettelbruck, 18/28 July 2008 and about the European Competition for Piano, Flute and in Chamber Music (brass), 16th November 2008.
More info: http://www.ugda.lu/
Valencia International Festival:
We are very sad that due to financial problems the ‘Valencia Festival’ which was such a good place for Youth Orchestras all over the world had to be cancelled over the past years and also in the near future.
The Valencia government adopted the World Youth Orchestra of Jeunesses Musicales International and the available budget is mainly spent on this organisation.
http://www.nayo.org.uk/ is the very interesting website of our founding member the National Association of Youth Orchestras in the UK!
Their annual festival of youth orchestras in Edinburgh and Glasgow is a wonderful event, where you should have played at least once!!
This can be combined with e.g. the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, http://www.aiyf.org/ . Scotland is a wonderful area to travel with a youth orchestra!!
European Cultural Capitals (http://europa.eu/)
In 2008 the EUCC’s are Stavanger and Liverpool.
In 2009 the focus in on Linz/Austria and Vilnius/Lit.
We all know that our Norwegian member UNOF is involved in the Stavanger Festival for Youth Orchestras and received an invitation to participate long ago; please look at http://www.unof.no/
EAYO and also EAAO are closely connected with the World Federation of Amateur Orchestras, http://www.wfao.org/
Musician, composer and WFAO webmaster Eric Colon, living in Kobe/Japan is always ready to answer questions; he is busy for us to find more info about festivals in Japan e.g. Kumamoto, Shizuoka, Ichikawa etc.
Miscellaneous:
Amateo, International Conference ‘Active Participation in Cultural Activities’
Ljubljana, Slovenia, June 20/22, 2008 http://www.amateo.info/
European Music Council, http://www.emc-imc.org/
Spain has a ‘NAYO’ too since 2004; http://www.aejo.org/ will tell you all about it, but only in Spanish yet; Asociacion Espanola de Jovenes Orquestas.
We sincerely hope they will join us as a member in the near future!

One website, 50 countries and 5 languages, Be part of something bigger…
Last but not least: http://www.sandradackow.com/
Dr. Sandra Dackow is the festival advisor of IAYO. She was present in Dublin and gave an amazing workshop ‘Conducting’ with the orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music in Dublin, Sunday morning 10 February 08.
In 90 minutes she created a totally different orchestra and ‘repertoire’.
Sandra is president of the Conductors Guild and wants to invite everybody to attend the 2009 meeting in New York, please at her website.
Very interesting website to find music arrangements for intermediate string orchestra’s is http://www.tempopress.com/
Also recommended: http://www.midwestclinic.com/ if you want to organise something in the USA, you should not miss that annual event in December.
Very special: ‘IAYO Child Protection Policy’ is a very impressive document! If you need information about this item, please contact the IAYO.
Details you can find at http://www.iayo.org/
Membershipfees 2008:
Please see enclosed invoice 2008, which is the same as last year 2007.
We realise that some of our members are growing and have many more member orchestras now, but we agreed that until the new organisation for Amateur Orchestras will start in May 2009 we will stick to the ‘old’ prices.
However, of this basic membershipfee we need every penny as we have our obligations towards our webmaster, webhost, our ‘umbrella’ the European Music Council and of course our costs for the administration, the Working Group on our way to the next
General Assembly in the Netherlands, Thursday 21st May 2009!
Be sure we are spending every Euro with great care!
At this moment our ‘office’ is free and handled by a volunteering president.
We will present you with a business plan in the near future. Please be sure to be present at the next General Assembly and to use your vote in deciding about all this.
The General Assembly will be the start of a 4 days weekend in May 2008.
The European Orchestra Festival, which EAAO/EVL is organising since their founding in 1985 every third year.
The 2009 festival will be hosted by our Dutch member FASO, which stands for Federation of Amateur Symphony and String Orchestras, http://www.fasobib.nl/ (sorry only in Dutch available at this moment).
For the first time also EAYO member orchestras are invited to join, as a good start of the new organisation structure we are aiming for.
During the Friday and Saturday workshops will be organised. Participants of these workshops will be an international mix and also a mix of all ages.
Every workshop has its own repertoire.
The final concert of these workshops is on Sunday morning May 24th, before returning home.
Of course the participating orchestras can also perform their own programme on the Friday and Saturday evenings.
If needed and possible EAYO can find a partner orchestra in the Netherlands for an extra concert as guest of this Dutch orchestra.
More info and details will be available soon; nb for youth orchestra’s there will be budget accommodation available.
As EAYO president I am member of the organising committee; the next meeting is mid March.
